I am delighted to see Gordon Brown following David Cameron's lead in taking key meetings out of London with a proposed Cabinet meeting in Liverpool in early 2009. I do think however the people of Liverpool would be more impressed if the Prime Minister showed the sort of commitment to the city that David Cameron, Chris Grayling and the Conservative Party have been showing for the past three years. They have been listening to the people of Liverpool and proposing real solutions to our society's problems that would make a real difference across the city.
The people of Liverpool will not be fooled by this cheap political stunt by a desperate Prime Minister, who is more worried about lost Labour votes than tackling real issues for Liverpool.

The Conservative Party is in danger of letting its lead in the country slip away. Distracted by the Corfu affair and unable to identify a distinctive position on the economy, there is a potential that this will allow Gordon Brown and Alastair Darling to reinforce their positon that state intervention, planning and expenditure is the only way forward. It worked for the banks didn't it, they will claim.
Except that no-one knows if it has worked or will work. Furthermore increasing public sectorspending is unlikely to address the complexities of an economy in recession. Recessions are about levelling out problems and different scetors need to shrink at different levels. Big clunky public expenditire projects do not help, could make things worse in the long run and of course at some stage will have to be paid for.
There is probably only one man to take on Brown and Darling and create an alternative and coherent arguement. A man who has a great gift at communicating the complex. Ken Clarke is your man.
